Internet Safety For Teenagers

As our children go through the transition of being innocent kids to becoming the responsible adults we all hope they will develop into, as parents we face even greater challenges in our efforts to ensuring they remain safe, particularly online.

It is during this period where, as we provide them with the opportunities to become more independent, where we tend to lose sight of what is happening in their lives.

Below are just some of the most prominent online activities to be aware of.

Tends to keep in mind:

  • iDosing:
Although not technically a new trend, the underground nature of this online activity means that it’s something which not many parents are aware of - reported to be used by teenagers as a way of achieving a sense of euphoria akin to the ‘highs’ achieved through the intake of drugs. It works by exposure to binaural audio files which are reported to stimulate mood.
  • Live Streaming:
Teens are putting themselves at risk through the use of live-streaming services currently provided by the majority of social media platforms – It may seem like an obvious one, but it is clear that teenagers continue to misuse this technology to expose themselves, regardless of the fact that they can be recorded by the person watching them.
  • iChallenge
An ever-evolving trend, but one which continues to grow in popularity, and although on the face of it, it may seem like no more than innocent fun, the expectation of compliance due to peer-pressure has also seen this venture in to the realm of the physically dangerous (through trends such as the neknominate and car surfing challenges) right through to the psychologically disturbing (such as collarbone and knee-gap challenges).
